When most people think of
Aromatherapy they often envisage it in terms of nice smells, gentle music,
relaxation and massage, wonderful . But I would like to give you an aroma
of the power of this gentle form of therapy and how I practice and have
developed this work at an intuitive level. Aromatherapy has become associated
with the use of essential oils via skin application specifically massage in
this country.
What are Essential
Oils?
Essential oils are highly concentrated, substances distilled
from plants sourced from around the world and picked and steamed at their peak
of oil content and vitality in order to capture the full therapeutic benefits
of the many chemical constituents of the plants from which they are drawn.
Like wine, aromatherapy oils can vary in quality and nature form year
to year depending on climate and the seasonal variations, there are better or
worse years for crops of different types.
I choose to use organic
Aromatherapy oils exclusively, because though more expensive it means I can
ensure my clients receive the highest quality essential oils which make for a
safer and more effective outcome of treatment.
This is important when
you remember that these oils will be applied to the skin, the body's largest
organ or in inhalational form directly into the lungs in each case these oils
find their way into the persons blood stream having their effect on so many
levels of being from bio-chemical to psycho-emotional and energetically.
Aromatherapy oils seen in this light can be viewed as a super concentrated
extension of herbal medicine, but are not taken orally. Because oils are
applied primarily to the skin, or inhaled, this highlights the need for the
most unadulterated pesticide free essential oils that one can
obtain.
Which Oils?
I have
worked with essential oils for over twelve years and discovered that just as
sick animals will gravitate to specific pants, berries and roots when ill, so
it is possible to trust a persons instinctive choices and know that this will
yield the perfect outcome.
In humans as in the animal kingdom this is
achieved via the sense of smell and my job is to help a person to be in contact
with this deep level of resourcefulness and knowledge within themselves that is
inherently trustworthy and will guide them to better health.
What to Expect?
The first session allows clients the opportunity to talk about
their current state of health and concerns in an unhurried way.
An agreed plan of action will then emerge.
Clients are then assisted in choosing essential oils using
their sense of smell. Time is allowed to refine these choices.
Combinations of oils will be blended uniquely for the
individual at that moment in time to achieve balance in aroma and therapeutic
effect.
If a massage with essential oils is appropriate, clients will
be asked to undress so that the relevant body areas are accessible whilst
maintaining privacy and dignity.
Clients are encouraged to give feedback on pressure and depth
of contact so that they feel safe and comfortable.
An initial consultation lasts for approximately one and a half
hours.
When the active part of the treatment is completed clients are
encouraged to rest and take time before returning to their everyday lives.
